Field Upgrade

Field One Upgrade 2010.

Last season the condition of Field one at Findlay was horrendous, bordering on embarrassing to host other club sides on the PSSC home ground.

Couch grass looks great in summer but lays dormant in the colder months and does not cope well with the wear and tear of soccer matches and training.

So during that summer the club engaged contractors to replace the Couch grass with Kikuyu.

The Couch was scalped off, the soil rotary hoed and 60 ton of sand was spread and levelled lifting the centre circle and other low points. 2000 square metres of Kikuyu turf was laid along with fertilizer.

Special thanks need to be extended to many people who were a tremendous help with this major project funded by the Port Saints Soccer Club.

Thanks to the team from Hastings Council, including Liam Bulley (head of Parks and Gardens) and Kerry Lewis (Sporting fields), for the repair and recommissioning of the irrigation system which was vital in the establishment of the new grass. As well as the donation of the sand used for levelling and the ongoing mowing maintenance of the entire oval.

Thanks to Earl and Janelle from Earls Turf Taree for suppling quality turf and working with us in what was a very busy period just before Christmas.

Thanks also to Luke from Luke Sears Concreting for donating his time and machinery assisting with the spreading of sand. Luke has a son playing in the club juniors.

Thanks to Gavin Darrington from Coates Hire Port Macquarie for helping out with availability of equipment on sometimes very short notice.  Gavin has three sons playing in the club.

Thanks to West Port High School Staff and students for their ongoing care taken especially during the establishment period.

Thanks to Andrew Lickley from All Stone & Landscape Services for installation and establishment of works. Andrew has four sons playing in the Club.

Last but not least, thanks to the PSSC Committee for the commitment shown to improve our facilities including the installation of the bollards last season to stop the "fangin hoons" ripping up the oval with cars and then again this year with the turf upgrade.
The committee welcomes all parents and coaches input into further projects and day to day running of the club. Please come along to monthly meetings 1st Tuesday of the month West Port Bowling Club.

The turf has taken well, apart from the high traffic areas of the goal mouths and some corrugations that have appeared.

During installation of turf to the outer regions, gaps were left between the rolls of turf to cover as much ground as possible. The gaps were filled with sand and the grass grew over and covered the gap. Recently the turf has settled leaving some corrugations.
At the end of the season we will continue to improve the grounds with top dressing to reduce and remove corrugations, low points and problem areas along with fertilizer and a revised mowing schedule.

This is the beginning of an ongoing process and we look forward to a better playing field which will v improve in the years ahead improve in the years ahead.
