Mens Saturday League

Saturday 17 May 2008 The Andrew Miedecke Motors-sponsored Port Saints Scorpions have turned in an abject display in the Football Mid-North Coast Men's Northern Saturday League, losing 5-1 against a 10-man Wauchope Axemen outfit. Wauchope took the lead mid-way through the first half, but momentum swung the Scorpions' way when the Axemen had a player dismissed for violent conduct. The home side made light of being a man down however, adding a second goal before half-time to go into the break 2-0 up. And Any hopes Port Saints had of getting back into the game quickly evaporated with a series of blunders gifting Wauchope two more goals, which sandwiched a well-worked fourth. Port Saints got on the scoresheet at the death through Daniel Carter's second goal of the season, but it was certainly no consolation for the humiliated Scorpions. Runaway league leaders Lower Macleay Lowies travel to take on Port Saints on Saturday (2:45pm) in what, on paper at least, looks like a mismatch even at this early stage of the season.

Wednesday 7 May 2008 The Port Saints Scorpions have caused an upset in the Football Mid-North Coast Men's Northern Saturday League after defeating Port United 3-2 in a catch-up game on Wednesday night. Port United raced into an early lead, but James White took his goals tally to four in three matches with a double to give the home side a 2-1 advantage at the break. Port United hit back with a freak goal in the second half to make it 2-2, and while they enjoyed the majority of possession the Scorpions always looked dangerous on the counter-attack as they searched for just their second win of the season. And that win came courtesy of a late Trent Harrison goal, the home side edging a competitive encounter to bring to an end a run of three games in just eight days.

The Dragons quickly raced into a two-goal lead, but Port Saints hit back with James White netting his second fine individual goal in as many games. A penalty after half-time saw the Dragons extend their lead to 3-1, but again the Scorpions managed to claw a goal back with a defensive mix-up allowing Ivan Kutlak the easiest of chances from close range. The Dragons finished the game strongly however, holding on to collect a deserved three points.

Wednesday 30 April 2008 A stunning late strike from James White gave the Port Saints Scorpions their first win of the Football Mid-North Coast Men's Northern Saturday League season thanks to a 4-3 success over Macleay Valley Rangers on Wednesday night. The visitors started the rearranged game, which was originally washed out on Saturday April 12, well, and quickly went into a 2-0 lead. Port Saints hit back against the run of play with Daniel Carter expertly heading home a well-flighted corner, but MVR deservedly restored their two-goal lead before the break. A tactical switch saw the home side move Trent Harrison from defence to attack, and, as the Scorpions started to dominate, Harrison struck twice to level the scores at 3-3. With time running out it looked like Port Saints would happily settle for just their second point of the season, but White had other ideas, arrowing a thunderous shot into the top corner with just minutes remaining to give the MVR keeper no chance. It was a welcome three points for the Scorpions, who take on Port United Dragons on Saturday (kick off 2:45pm) at Findlay Park.

The home side, Upper Macleay Yowies, had the better of the first half, but squandered a number of chances with the best of them seeing Scorpions goalkeeper Nick Bennie superbly save a penalty. The Yowies continued to create the better chances, and deservedly went ahead in the second half with a thumping finish. But Port Saints hit back to snatch a draw when Alistair McCulloch went forward for a corner, which he met well at the near post to earn his side their first point of the season.

Saturday 29 March 2008 The Port Saints Scorpions have started their Football Mid-North Coast Men's Northern Saturday League campaign with a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of the Panthers. The visitors dominated the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the break, and when they added a third with a thumping free-kick in the second half the game looked over. But Port Saints hit back with Mitch Howard finishing from close range after some good work on the right from Nick Bennie, and when Mark Fowler converted a penalty it looked like the home side might go on and snatch an unlikely point. The Panthers put paid to that, however, with a fine strike late on securing a deserved three points.
